Thursday, July 26, 2007 > My Manglish is Underestimated!!
Here's the story:I am almost done with my placement, well, that meaning that I am going to be done tomorrow evening at 5pm (WOOHOO!!). Anyways, because it is afterall a Uni placement and I am supposed to be graded on it, my "boss" here has to fill out an evaluation form. I just came back from a meeting with her in regards to that.
There are many different areas that I am evaluated on. Stuff such as, "Leadership Skills", "Willingness to learn" and blah blah. All that sort of stuff. I saw the ticks in the boxes, "Excellent", "Excellent" and "Excellent". Suddenly I noticed a tick out of alignment, slightly more to the left. It was ticked on the "Very Good" box. Fyi, "Very Good" is less good than "Excellent".
Guess what box was ticked as only "Very Good"???? My Oral Communication Skills. Seriously, out of the all the different aspects, the one that I thought I would have at least gotten an "Excellent" or better still, an "Outstanding", I got a "Very Good". People who know me know that I have no trouble at all in my oral communication, in fact, some people probably wish that I had less ability to display my oral communication skills so often.
She explained that she sometimes doesn't totally grasp what I am trying to say and she said that I seem to lose her. She said that it's ok, because I haven't been in Australia for long. I proceeded to tell her that English has been my first language my entire life, and she was certainly surprised. I tell you, these Aussies. Just because someone has a different accent to them, they give them a "Very Good".
Don't get me wrong. I am not complaining about the grade. It's just that, if I could have gotten an "Excellent" for Punctuality (people that know me will again know how bad I am with time), it is truly an insult to get a "Very Good" for my Oral Communication.
Oh well, what to do. I will never ever conform and take on the Australian accent. I will just have to live with it LAH! (2) comments
Monday, July 16, 2007 > Siblings
It was early Monday morning when I decided to "warm-up" a little before doing the work that I am actually supposed to do. So blog surfing I went. Went to my sister's blog and saw that she posted pictures of my baby brother's (Loser) birthday party. It was then, on a depressing, cold and mundane Monday morning that I felt like I sorely missed my siblings.
They say that he looks like me?
Michael Rowan spoke of the different kinds of love at camp. One of the four different types was "Storge" love, meaning family love. No matter how irritating my siblings can get or how far away I am, I guess I am stuck loving them forever.

My workmates always ask me to join them for lunch and I usually refuse cause I don't want to be tempted to eat all the junk they have at the Kiosk downstairs. Then they proceed to ask me why I am not eating like everyone else. I reply that it's cause I have a tummy along with a lot of other things.
They retort in disbelief and say that I have nothing to lose. They think I am some crazy weight obsessed nutcase.
It certainly is nice to be living in a fat nation. The only problem is that I come from a non-fat nation, so it's hard to lose that mentality. Fat teasing friends also don't help.
Anyway, one more point to Australia in helping boost my self esteem.
Just for your information:
I am so going to jail. Especially since I am now working with the SA government and every website and email sent is passed through some system. First I was blocked from entering the MSN webmessenger website because it was "deemed as inappropriate for office use" and they went on to notifiy me that "this notice is logged in the systems." Scared me to death but no, I still proceeded to use meebo.com after a friend informed me of it existence. Also, I email friends telling them I am counting down hours till going home and blog during office hours, calling this a fat nation.
So if you don't hear from me, I am most definitely in jail. Hopefully I would have at least gotten a visit from the really handsome IT fellas from Level 9. (0) comments
